Hi Parents and Students!
Ms. Winslette here. I am back in the Media Center and ready to charge into the New School Year!
I will be posting Summer Reading Lists from the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC). As a division of the American Library Association, ALSC is the world’s largest organization dedicated to the support and enhancement of library service to children. The lists are grouped 1) Birth to Preschool, 2) Kindergarten to Second, 3) Third to Fifth, and 4) Sixth to Eighth. Each book listed has a small synopsis and ISBN information. You’ll find reading lists below. Encourage your students to read above their current grade level. Summer reading is a fantastic way to decrease summer loss. According to ReadingRockets.org, “summer reading loss refers to the decline in children’s reading development that can occur during summer vacation times when children are away from the classroom and not participating in formal literacy programs (Allington & McGill-Franzen, 2003).” According to the Colorado State Library “The survey results are compelling, demonstrating that children’s enjoyment of reading, reading skills, and reading by choice often increased after participating in summer reading.” These lists are not exhaustive, but they are an excellent place to start. Each title has several copies available at your neighborhood public library! Below you will find a link to the Cobb County Public Library System. There you can find locations, hours, and summer events.
Please email me, Julie.firstname.lastname@example.org, if you have any questions. Thank you for your support of IAS and let’s kick of Summer 2017 by reading!
