Safe Touch Curriculum
The International Academy of Smyrna (IAS) prides itself on the ability to create Global thinkers who are caring, open-minded achievers and life-long learners. Safe Touch is a personal safety curriculum designed for kindergarten through fifth grade students to teach the skills they need to prevent or interrupt child sexual abuse. Children learn what abuse is; they learn personal body safety rules; they learn who can help them; and they learn what to do if threatened or harmed. Using the ASCA model’s Mindset and Behaviors our school is addressing the following areas:
M 1. Belief in development of whole self, including a healthy balance of mental, social/emotional and physical well-being
B-SS 8. Demonstrate advocacy skills and ability to assert self, when necessary
IAS will follow the Safe Touch Curriculum which is designed for scholars in grades K-6 grade and addresses the following Learning Objectives:
- Students will learn that their body is their own and they are in charge of it.
- Students will acquire the skills and techniques to identify unsafe situations and to react appropriately.
- Students will learn to respond assertively to unwanted or inappropriate touch.
- Students will learn to leave and tell a trusted adult.
The Safe Touch Curriculum requires a five-day lesson plan:
K-1 grades = 30 minutes each day
2-3 grades = 45 minutes each day
4-5 grades = 45 minutes each day (https://www.kidscenter.org/safe-touch/)
The Safe Touch curriculum continues our goal to empower scholars with the socio-emotional skills that help them with being global thinkers and life-long learners. IAS will implement the Safe Touch Curriculum during September – October annually including follow up classroom guidance lessons during the school year.
