After School Chess Club

IIAS PTA welcomes and thanks our Business Partner in Education, Mr. Tarun Ganeriwal and Chess2Children, who are offering an after-school Chess Club. Playing chess has proven to help students enhance their creativity, improve their power of concentration, develop and expand critical thinking skills, boost memory and retention, and achieve superior academic performance. Additionally, chess has been shown to augment problem-solving capabilities, provide cultural enrichment, advance intellectual maturity, and enhance self-esteem…qualities that we all desire for our children.

WHAT
:   Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Chess classes will be offered. The Beginner class will be held on Tuesday and Intermediate/Advanced class on Thursday afternoons. Tentative start dates are Tuesday, August 24th and Thursday, August 26th. The registration deadline is August 20th.

COST: Chess Club Tuition is $30 per month (4 classes).  A 5% sibling discount is offered along with a 5% semester pay in advance discount* to IIAS PTA members and families.  Parent volunteer discounts are available.  Payments must be made prior to the start of enrollment.  Chess2Children also will offer heavy-duty traveling chess sets for your children for $20.00.

After School Martial Arts Program

They’re back! One of the most popular after school enrichment programs ever held at Imagine Smyrna: All American Tae Kwon Do martial arts, starting Tuesday, August 24th. That class, as well as the class the following week will be free to allow all interested students an opportunity to discover the fun of martial arts classes.

WHAT: According to Master Margaret Moore, Ed.D., parents have been calling about the start date for the classes since mid-July. “Parents consistently tell us how much their child enjoys our classes and how beneficial it has been in improving their grades and self-control”, says Ms. Genevieve Ketelle, mom of two IIAS students and Head Assistant Instructor at All American Tae Kwon Do.  Teachers and pediatricians have long recommended tae kwon do classes for children with ADD/ADHD or other learning challenges.  As a former Special Education teacher and teacher trainer, Master Moore has guided her instructors in understanding how best to teach students with special needs. Our certified instructors know what you want for your child:

  • Great focus and concentration to do well in school
  • Confidence to ask and answer questions
  • Self-assurance to be “bully proof”
  • Fun and fitness
  • Self-control to make healthy decisions now and throughout life

WHEN: Normally, the class is divided into two groups according to age and both classes run at the same time. For the trial classes, however, there will be two class times: Kindergarten, grades 1, 2 and 3 will have class at 3:45 p.m. Grades 4 through 8 will participate from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. Students do not have to be enrolled in the ASP program to participate and parents are encouraged to come and observe the classes. Registration packs will be distributed during that class. Special reduced rates for siblings and students with financial hardship are available.

"All Things Etiquette" Program

Bronze Level I-PETS, Vinings Creative Learning Center (VCLC) led by Ms. Eileen Ross, is offering an "All Things Etiquette" class for Kindergarten - 8th grade students. The classes are a fun way to teach students basic etiquette, such as how to eat properly at home and in public, how to address adults properly (eye contact, firm hand shake), how to dress and groom properly and more.

WHAT: The "All Things Etiquette for Kids" after school program is designed to teach children great manners and life skills in all aspects of their lives. Great manners are important at school, at restaurants, with other children and adults as well as at home. Our goal is to teach your child very important (and necessary) life skills that will make you proud and comfortable taking your child out to playdates, dinner, or to visit friends and family! We go beyond dining skills - we teach the whole child in areas that are unfortunately becoming a thing of the past - respect for adults, respect for young ladies, proper grooming and apparel for young men, eye contact, firm handshake, speaking clearly and articulately, etc.

Topics Covered in Series One:

  • Basic manners (Please, thank you, respect for adults, etc.)
  • Meeting and greeting children and adults (eye contact / handshake / using proper language, etc.)
  • Mealtime etiquette and dining skills (correct use of knife and fork, eating with mouth closed, sitting correctly at the table, proper use of napkin, etc.)
  • Proper grooming (appropriate attire, neatness, cleanliness, etc.)
  • Telephone skills and emergency phone use
  • Writing thank you notes
  • And much more!

"All Things Etiquette for Kids" - Series One will be taught in twelve lessons, 60 minutes per lesson. Series One will conclude with a party and meal to demonstrate what was learned and a certificate ceremony!  You will be truly amazed at what your child will learn - have a new child in 12 lessons!

Eileen Ross will be your child's instructor for this class. Mrs. Ross will use her many years of experience and knowledge in working with children and young adults as a teacher and Director as well as her participation in the Children's Etiquette Teaching Series presented by the American School of Protocol.

WHEN: Classes are tentatively scheduled to be held on Mondays beginning September 13, 2010. Other days may be added based on level of interest.
